Biotechnology Focus interviewed Quebec Minister of Economy, Innovation,and Exports Jacques Daoust regarding the province's innovation policies in regards to the life sciences sector. Mr. Daoust stated that was home to seven of the ten major players and biopharma and "stood out" in terms of scientific discoveries because of the province's talent and infrastructure. He saw the role of the government in maintaining and expanding the sector as making targeted investments, including taking stakes in companies, encouraging public/private collaborations through Invest Quebec, including partnerships with global companies, and recruiting foreign firms to come to the province. He identified challenges going forward as access to capital, talent development, and changing business models involving decreased R&D.
